Lake Placid Horse Shows
See 1,000 horses prance, jump and trot
Every summer, Lake Placid becomes the center of the equestrian universe when the Lake Placid Horse Shows arrive – and in 2014, an extra week has been added to the event, bringing it to three weeks. The event actually combines three separate shows: the Lake Placid Horse Show is the first week, followed by the I Love New York Horse Show and now the Adirondack Horse Show. More than $500,000 in prizes are at stake.
At a glance
- Walking tours of the grounds are given at 11:30 a.m. on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays while the shows are running.
- The show, in its 44th year, began with a single week and just one ring in 1970; now, competition runs in four rings simultaneously.
- Not all the competition is in the ring: Competitors dress up their dogs in the annual Doggie Costume, and local shopkeepers vie in a window-decorating contest.
