Saranac Laboratory Museum
The disease that helped shape Saranac Lake
Dr. Edward Livingston Trudeau is a well known name throughout the Tri-Lakes area, and so is the historical presence, or lack thereof, of tuberculosis. Trudeau came to Saranac Lake in 1873 suffering from tuberculosis, soon after he he found that the mountain climate improved his condition. He built a home in the area and started to research tuberculosis. In 1894, Trudeau's work led to the construction of the first laboratory in the U.S. dedicated to the study of tuberculosis. The laboratory is now open to the public with exhibits on Trudeau's research and patient care.
