Polar Bear Plunge

Take a new year’s dip and help a good cause

Some people head into the new year in the Adirondacks thinking: If only it could get colder. Well, this one’s for you. Freak. Strip down to your Speedo and dive into Long Lake from the Town Beach – after the fire department cuts the ice, that is. All this lunacy is for a good cause, as the event raises money for the Wounded Warrior Project, which assists veterans injured in conflicts fought after 9/11.

At a glance
  • Plungers raise money by signing up donors
  • Divers must be 18 or older
  • Trophies awarded for best costume, best technique, and most money raised individually and by a team
  • The Long Lake Rescue Squad checks each plunger before jumping in
